Smoke Tests

Where there is concern about the condition of a chimney or an older chimney is going to be put back into use after a while it is advisable to undertake a Chimney smoke test.

A Chimney smoke test will identify any faults within the construction which would cause fumes to escape into rooms or the loft void during the normal operation of your fire or appliance.

After warming the flue for a few minutes a smoke pellet is set and then the bottom and top of the chimney are closed off during the test forcing the smoke to escape through any gaps that exist in the chimney.

Any smoke leakage can then be investigated further and the damaged area repaired, or chimney relined, to make the chimney safe before use.
